Web Tip: Stealth Surfing

Cover your tracks on the Internet.

By Robert Heron

Today's Web browsers do a terrific job at keeping track of the sites a user visits. The browser caches frequently accessed information for quick retrieval and can remember specific user preferences on a site-by-site basis with the use of cookies.

A great shareware program called SurfSecret takes the work out of keeping your browsing habits safe from prying eyes. SurfSecret offers to automatically clean out the browser's cache files, history folder, location bar URLs, and cookies. SurfSecret's thoughtfully laid out menus give you check-box control over what it should and should not eliminate, as well as how often the program should perform the cleaning.

What makes SurfSecret stand out is the program's ability to clean out several Windows-related items that may hold personal information such as the recycle bin, documents menu, last-run menu, temp files, and find menu.

SurfSecret works with IE and Netscape. For AOL users, SurfSecret offers an option to clear the location bar information and the AOL cache files. The program can be run in "stealth" mode to prevent the application from being visible on your local computer and network. Password protection is also available with the registered version.

Both Netscape and Internet Explorer remember which URLs have been typed into the address bar. The AutoComplete feature built into Windows displays a list of matching entries such as Web addresses or completes form entries on webpages.

Recent revelations of some companies using this information stored by the browser to track the individual user makes the ability to control or eliminate this information more important than ever. Users can eliminate this information from prying eyes by using SurfSecret.

Download a 30-day trial version of SurfSecret or purchase the program for $39.95.
