    Security and Privacy News:

Teen Arrested for Creating Sasser Virus; Microsoft Reward Responsible
A German teen was arrested Friday for creating the Sasser virus, and tips from informants played a key role. Microsoft has a $5 million fund for those who provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of virus creators, and tips given to Microsoft led to this arrest.

New version of the Sasser Virus Sprouts Up
Since the arrest on Friday, a new version of the Sasser virus has appeared, leading authorities to believe the confessed creator of the virus was not working alone.

Fingerprint Software Confuses Identities; Victims Sue
Two men are suing biometrics company "Identix" after having their fingerprints mistaken for those of convicted felons. One man spent 43 days in prison while the other claims his business was ruined due to the mistake. The victims are also suing Oregon and California, claiming that the states knew of the defect in the identification software, which tracks fingerprints and assigns IDs based on them. There were at least 97 duplicate IDs found in the current system in Oregon.

Boeing to Provide Internet Access on Airplanes
Though Boeing has spent more than two years and one billion dollars on developing and testing high-speed Internet access for their airplanes, they aren't sure if customers will go for the idea. Later this month, a flight from Munich to LA should have the hardware and software available for those on the flight. It is extremely costly to add this service to airplanes, and a hard expense to justify when everyone is trying to cut costs. Several airlines have ordered planes with the service, though, and the next step will be to see if people use it.

China Closes Internet Cafes, Claiming Harm to Children
China shut down more than 8,000 Internet cafes in the past three months. The official Xinhua news agency announced that any Internet cafe that allows children to enter will face "rigid, severe penalties" and said that these places have brought "great harm to the mental health of teenagers."

New Circuitry Built Into TVs To Prevent Recording
Starting July 2005, every television sold in the U.S. will include an electronic circuit that will check incoming TV shows for an electronic "flag." The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) will put these "flags" onto various TV shows and movies to prevent you from recording them. Because the music industry has had such trouble with people copying and sharing music, and because TV signals are going digital, the MPAA is taking these steps to prevent future piracy.

    April Produces Record Spam Levels
The Can-Spam Act that passed in January seemed to quell the amount of spam emails people were receiving. February and March showed a sharp decline in the number of spam mails being sent. Unfortunately the effect of the Can-Spam Act was short-lived, and in April more than 80% of U.S. email was classified as spam. Some experts claim that the act was not strong enough to have a real effect, though the numbers don't seem to be preventing people from using email.

    Tips and Tricks:

What a Blog Is and How To Get One
Blog comes from the words "Web log" and basically means a journal on the Internet. A blog can rant about anything from politics to technology, fashion to pets. It can educate by providing links to other sites, or simply provide the details of a person's day-to-day existence. Google has recently updated its blogging site, www.blogger.com to make it easier to use. You can post your own blog, or check out blogs that others have posted. A well-known technology blog is www.slashdot.org, and if you're searching for a political blog, try www.instapundit.com or www.talkingpointsmemo.com.

    Online Language Translation Resources
Alta Vista's Babel Fish is a great resource for a rough translation of any text. If you find a resource on the Internet and it's not in your native language, you can paste the text into the translator and go to and from 12 different languages, including Greek, Chinese, and Japanese. You can also have Babel Fish translate an entire web site, simply by entering the web address. Other web sites also provide translations and dictionaries, including www.word2word.com and www.foreignword.com. If you find a foreign site on Google, there will be a link next to the site that says "Translate this page." You can choose this option to view an English version of the site.
